This evening I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Lenny the 13 week old Whippet, Ruby the 13 week old Groodle and Daisy the 8.5 week old Airedale 💕I was swooning... Lots... 💕Week one of puppy class is covering terminology, looking at basic obedience positions - sit and drop.We discuss nipping, sleeping, jumping up, toileting and loads more.My puppy course is 4 weeks, however training should not stop there. So... Impulse control...Here's the thing...I do yack on about it all the time... Every class... Broken record really... 🙄If we take our dog out and let them meet everyone in an excited manner, or we let them meet every dog in an excited manner... What are we teaching? 😳We need to wait until our dogs are in a calm headspace before we allow them to go forward.It takes time. Photo of my old mug... 🤣I talk a lot in my classes about clear communication.I talk about leading with confidence, not dominating.I talk a lot about teaching our dogs how to make good choices.When your dog realises that you are the person they can confidently follow - it is the most precious gift that you can be given.I got out with K&P and I see so many people disconnected with their dogs. They are on the phone, they are chatting with friends, they are chasing their kids... Crate training/place training.I'm reaping the benefits today.I noticed Piper's tail was in a weird position this morning when I got her out of her crate.She is also a little flat 😞Did the usual morning things with Kubo, Piper, Cumin and Wasabi and then went out to my classes.Came back in and she is still quiet and her tail is still in an unusual position.No walking today - strict rest. Road trip today in the new Sealion 7! I love it!!!Found a nice off lead dog park just outside of Gosford to take Kubo and Piper to. We had a great time.The darling husband and I then found this lovely little dog friendly cafe just outside Gosford for a Chai Latte and lunch.A gentleman with a small, very wiggly doodle pup came over with her in his arms saying she was very excited to meet K&P.Hard no... Not a dog park. I choose a table off to the side so we won't be disturbed...🙄The gentleman didn't really understand and thought I was being difficult, but I don't care. I wasn't rude, but I did make it very clear I wasn't interested in my dogs having a play session at the cafe.My dogs know they are to relax while we are sitting. They do not have meet/greets or play at coffee shops.If I allow it, they will come to expect it. Best in the park 💕Holding stay while the darling husband runs to the car ( new EV... Her name is Elektra - in love ). Stuff is going on around them - don't move, just maintain position.Then we had a couple of people calling Piper. Tonight I didn't allow her to go up to people as she was just too excited. I talk a lot in my classes about the headspace our dog is in while out.If they are hyper - it is not a good idea to allow them to barrel in to meet people as they will be jumpy and overly enthusiastic.It is also teaching your dog that it is an entirely appropriate thing to do...No...Teach your dog how to approach life in a calm way.#DogTraining #dogsofnorthernbeaches #northernbeachespets #northernbeachespuppies #northernbeachesdogs ... Went to visit a friend today 💕Miss Ash had her eye removed a week ago and has to wear a cone for another week.Her dad invited Kubo and Piper along too, so to set them up to win, the darling husband and I took them for a big run beforehand.When we arrived, leads stayed on and both dogs put into drop/stay. No wandering. Just stay put.This is my expectation whenever my dogs are invited anywhere. I often talk about a 'bubble' in class.I also often joke about my Piper who would willingly go off with anyone if she was invited and not look back. I'm serious here. She would.It's her gregarious personality. I have poured blood, sweat and not quite tears... Well... Close... Into my relationship with her. I got her as an older pup - outside critical phase, which made it even harder. She was not interested in toys at all. 😔Other dogs. Not me. I worked on that. Then people became her kryptonite... 🙄I also have several students who have young dogs like my Piper. They aren't easy! Seriously! You enter a battle for engagement every single time you step outside. It's exhausting.Take your young dog out super hungry. This will help. Mark and reward when they look at you. Dispense a meal this way.Use a long line. This way you control the narrative. Go into quiet places and build on your engagement. Teach them to find you at the end of the lead.Be super chill. Don't be repetitive in calling them or issuing instructions over and over. By being chill, they will be chill. Zen out and when they look to you, mark and reward.I don't play with my dogs in the house. Everyone is always amazed at this. No. Inside is where I want my dogs to switch off and chill. If I play with them inside, I would have a couple of creepers staring me out while I watch Netflix 😳Play with your dog while out and about. Seriously. Who doesn't want to play with their dog??? When they get to about 5-6 months things start to get really hard as they are no longer puppies, but Velociraptors... Oh sorry... Adolescent 🙄Here is where you really need to knuckle down, use a long line - I like a 5 metre lead - and teach them. Hyper headspace - no meet and greet. Calm headspace - meet and greet.Overly social dogs are difficult to have out and about when they are super pumped. They are looking for ALL of the attention in front of them. Piper came to pay as you go class today!I needed my right-hand Chika to help demonstrate some of the things I wanted to have fun with in class today.Training should not be boring. Make it fun!We did send aways, paws, middle and the infinity twist. Saw Arlo this morning 💕 We went for a stroll 😍We had some pretty good training opportunities crop up during our time together.A dog went off at us from a second story balcony. Arlo thought he'd fire back but I had a conversation with him about that 😉We then came across a couple of fence ragers - pretty keen ones too. Arlo was a little jumpy, but he checked in and listened. We wandered on 💕We also came across a dog who was staring him out... I think if I'd let Arlo fire up we would have had a bit of a shouting match going on, but he didn't. He checked in with me, I asked him to leave it and we ignored the situation.All these were everyday things and he handled it like a champion ❤️Don't be on your phone. Don't go out chatting with your mates. Chill...Do nothing...It takes a lot of control for a dog to just switch off and chill out... Especially when there is a lot going on around them.Up at the park today. There were lots of people running around playing ball and loads more dogs running around too.Teach your dog about stopping. Meet Arlo 💕I love this dude. His eyes 😍He's a young rescue who is very picky about who he likes. Unfortunately with those beautiful eyes going on and how handsome he is, lots of people want to pat him. I mean... He's irresistible.But, Arlo doesn't want your love... Sorry... Not sorry...He's lucky too as his owners - Cassie and John - advocate for him.I went over this morning to see if he'd let me take him out for a little walk. Boost his confidence.He came running out yelling at me, but pretty quickly realised who I was. I took the time needed, then I leashed him up and off we went.We had fun. He was allowed to sniff, but he was to check in and engage. Initially he was a bit taken aback, but we hit our stride and he was super.Structure, guidelines, confidence. As our dogs age, we notice changes...They become more sensitive to things at night...They become more sensitive to grooming...They become a bit more intolerant to things they used to tolerate...An older dog is like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow...They are so special.My Kubo is 8 years old and considered a 'senior'... 😭He has been Uncle to so many dogs in his 8 year career...I've now officially retired him.Don't know where the time went... 🥹It's not often you come across a dog that is so important in your training career.He's special 💕#dogtrainer #dogsofnorthernbeaches #northernbeachespets #northernbeachespuppies #northernbeachesdogs ... Went to Centennial Park yesterday 💗Bikes, cars, people, dogs and birds. All the birds...We walked through the birds and Kubo and Piper were uninterested.Both Kubo and Piper's exposure has been carefully orchestrated over a long period of time.Lots of repetition to create the ambivalence I need in each scenario.It takes time and patience. Just because they are successful once, does not mean they instantly know what to do next time.Practice. Training.Impulse control.Engagement.Communication.I do a lot of off lead work with Kubo and Piper. I do this because they have a strong foundation.They walk nicely on lead. They also have a strong recall.They want to be with me. They want what I have. They are not interested in anyone else - well... Piper 🙄🤣 Even with Piper's enthusiasm for meeting people and the fact she would go off with anyone... She is not allowed to go up to a person if her headspace is all wrong.If she is too excited - that is a no. She will make the wrong choice and jump up. Solid no.If she is calm - then I will let her BUT I am keeping a hawks eye on her to ensure she remains calm. Reward for calm - she gets the meet/pat.Your dog needs to learn how to listen and make good choices no matter how excited they are or what is going on around them.This is impulse control. This is engagement. This is communication.This means practicing over and over and over again. 100's of fun repetitions. It was a hot one today 🔥🥵🔥While out, we wet down both dogs and kept to the shade.We also found a shady spot to stop and sit for a short while.I have found I need to do some training around this - particularly with Kubo.When we go out to Tunks Park, we are always moving or training or the dogs are sniffing. We don't stop.Today - sitting and chilling for a short while - he found it a bit frustrating as he wanted his ball 🙄A training situation - I will be working on this with him over the next short while, until he learns to chill in this context.If we are on lead, out at nurseries, Bunnings etc - he's excellent at chilling.Take the time to know your dog and do the training.#dogtrainer #dogsofnorthernbeaches #northernbeachespets #northernbeachespuppies #northernbeachesdogs ...
