Today I was out with these two 💗Today's training was "stay with me".Piper is ambivalent towards other dogs... People however are her kryptonite... 🙄She turns into idiotville... Wriggling, whining, wanting to jump straight into a face... 🙄😳So I'm having to teach her the value of "stay with me".In doing so, there are games to be had and a truck load of lollies. You can see in these photos I've got a 3 metre lead on her so I can use it if she forgets herself.You can also see she is watching what is going on in the pen next to us, without charging over like an embarrassing knob.Looking is learning. This chickadee was impressive today. She's pooped now 💕I took both Kubo and Piper to Clontarf this afternoon.Couldn't park - parking is a nightmare... 🙄 Anyway... Parked miles away and walked to the beach.All groovy.We were way off to the side as I wanted to do some training with Piper on impulse control.We had a Golden Retriever come over to us looking for some zoomies... Not today.I put Kubo in a drop/stay and Piper in a sit/stay. Both my dogs being still- the Golden got bored and moved away.Huge praise for both dogs and we continued to have fun 💗We had another person approach our area who kept throwing their dog's ball toward us... 🙄I just moved off to one side and gave both dogs the instruction to 'leave it'.They did.Having your dog out with you doesn't mean they have to meet every dog while out. It doesn't mean they have to meet every person while out.Having your dog off lead means your dog is under effective control at all times. It means they listen to you above all else.Piper at this stage is still not under effective control. So here's the thing.Impulse control means teaching your dog to make good choices no matter what hyper arousal level they are in or around.This is where the training becomes boring for most people.You see... Your dog does well in a very low stimulus environment, so you jump several steps forward because you think they should know what to do, because they did it in your backyard...A dog's life is like a picture book. Change the scene and you need to go back to basics to train up again. Each scenario is different.Then... Here's the real thing...When the foundation is nice and solid - you then need to raise the bar.Training isn't a lovely straight line forward. It is 2 steps forward... 4 steps back. 3 steps forward... 1 step back. You get the picture.Training is reading the room. There was a dog that raced the fence line where I was today 🙄 so I used that hyper energy to do some training with Piper.She was on her 5 meter run line, which I had hold of initially.She was super keen to get to this dog, so I simply hooked the lead on the fence and started to train with Kubo till she settled down.Once she did, Kubo was placed in a drop/stay while I worked with Piper.We did lead walking, focus, game play and in a very short time, she forgot about what was happening in the next pen.Both dogs were rotated, both dogs were required to chill while waiting their turn, then they had 'free' time.It was a fun session 😍Take the time.Train your dog.#blackdog#blackgsd #blackgermanshepherd #kelpiecross #kelpiemix #dogtraining #dogtrainer #dogsofnorthernbeaches #northernbeachespets #northernbeachespuppies #northernbeaches #northernbeachesdogs ... Today was a milestone in Piper's training.She came out this morning for a fragile dog named Dash. A glorious little Havanese 💕Dash is terrified of the world.We did an initial intensive session with her owners 3 weeks ago. They had three weeks to develop a foundation for Dash that we could build on.They did an outstanding job.In the session today, Kubo came out first. Dash was non reactive.I then bought Piper out. I was very aware of her age here. She had effusive energy.She was brilliant. That was a doozy of a storm 😳Some of the thunder claps startled Piper, so I went out and played with her and just chilled.This was at the beginning. She whizzed around the yard a couple of times, then ran inside with wet feet 🙄When the storm intensified, Kubo and Piper were popped in their crates with a bone each.We also had Luna from next door here with a bone as well.All good now 💕. I get asked time and again about crate training.There is still this way of thinking that it is cruel.Look at this photo.Piper literally heaves a sigh of relief when I pop her into her crate to 'switch off'.She is a very high drive dog. I got her at 16 weeks, I'm working on her "off" switch.Crates are your dog's bedroom.A place where they are safe, can completely relax and just let go.Crates aren't cruel. Out today to do some gentle training, mainly - with Piper - but Kubo came along for the ride.Expectations today - * Independence from Kubo, * Sniff and explore, but recall immediately when asked,*Watch the dogs in the other area, but recall immediately when asked,* Move with me, when I move.Her run line was shorter today, but I didn't need to use it once.If you spend the time layering up a strong foundation when your dog is young, that foundation can be built on as your dog matures.You then have a dog that is easy to take anywhere.I got Piper at around 16 weeks. After a hectic weekend of wedding celebrations and interstate visitors - it's now quiet.The darling husband and I took the dogs out earlier this evening for some exercise for them and us.The darling husband and Kubo were inside the dog park, Piper and I were barreling around the outside.Piper is overly social. She forgets where her centre is when she's hyper. She forgets to check in. Finished sessions for this weekend.My intensive, older dog group have one more session to go, to tidy stuff up.They are a fun, amazing group who have done the work.My Junior group had week 2 and we had a ripper time. Took Piper up to my local shopping centre this morning.She's overly social - both dogs and people - so I'm working on her engagement and impulse control while out. This is something I would have started at 8-9 weeks like I did with Kubo, however, she was 16ish weeks when I adopted her.It is going to take many, many, many repetitions for her to realise the fun isn't outside our bubble, but rather, in it 💗I stayed in a low stimulus area where she could see people walking by, but just far enough away that she could still make great choices.It was a super session that was ended on a high.Proud of this little dog 😍#kelpiecross #dogtraining #dogtrainer #dogsofnorthernbeaches #northernbeachespets #northernbeachespuppies #northernbeaches #northernbeachesdogs ... Setting up for my 10.30am puppy class this morning.While I'm getting organised, Kubo and Piper are required to chill on their beds.We will do some fun stuff shortly, but I need to concentrate on getting my class things organised first... and do this post... 😃Teaching your dog to just chill is a crucial part of foundation training.My dogs are relaxed and waiting. This, most cheeky, devilish of all big ears is 7 months old tomorrow 💗I've had her 3 months. Rude almost racing into asshat phase, but it is what it is.Today her freedom has been rescinded. She's out for play, out for training, out for supervised free time, then crate or tie up. The change in her attitude this morning has been remarkable.By simply helping her to cool her jets, she's thinking, clear headed and much calmer.You can give freedom and privileges, but you can also rescind them.She's full throttle adolescent phase. She is going to test the waters. If she thinks she can get away with it, she is all in...It's my job to coach her along the way and keep her on track, without crushing her gloriously, stubborn, larger than life personality!!!Won't take me long...
