Both the darling husband and I were starting to get a tad sick of being wet all the time when out with Kubo and Piper.Friday afternoon after being out with them in heavy rain again, we decided our $2 Bunnings ponchos weren't cutting the mustard any more...So...Off we popped to @patagoniaaus to buy some real rain jackets - love me a jacket 💕The darling husband got a nice black one, I got myself a lovely lavender one ( no pink 😞 ).What happens next?Rain stops.This is Saturday afternoon - the thing we haven't seen in a long time - the sun - is shining!!!Lovely sunny day today too, and supposedly the rest of the week.You can all thank me... Privilege. It's a thing..I'm always being complimented on how well behaved my dogs are. They truly are 💕They are because I've put in hundreds of hours in training... Building a solid foundation of communication and engagement.I create an atmosphere where my dogs love my bubble and truly want to be with me.They are allowed to meet other dogs - but here's the catch - they are only allowed to do so if they are calm and in the right headspace.I work hard to teach them how to read the room. I work hard to teach them about impulse control while out. I work hard to teach them about engagement while out.Most of my sessions are where people have given their dogs way too much freedom before that foundation has been solidified.Teenagers think they know it all 😉. When your dog is in adolescent phase - they are going to flex and try it on... Just like teenagers 🙄If there is a super solid foundation, it's not really a problem. I hope you are all sitting so you are prepared for... Master Roo 💕😍💕Roo has just had week 3 of puppy class and his handler - Steph - is so good I've had to advance them!They are a trainers dream 💗Tonight Roo met my Piper and learned that it is not all about manic play. He learned that just hanging out with Piper and his people is what it is all about.He was perfect 💕It was a super fun session this evening - might bring the big gun - Kubo - out next week! Out and about with Kubo and Piper today. The darling husband is crook.We had a lovely time wandering together. I have to say - couldn't be prouder of my two.Couple of very ill mannered dogs today with very lazy owners. We did nose work stuff tonight. Now she is exhausted 💕My Piper is full on. Like FULL on. When we do nose work stuff - she is ON. Oh my wordy lordy she's ON. Seriously! She's crazy!!! ( She's a bit like me at a party... 😳 ).She wants to be on the course working the whole time. She has no patience waiting! None!This is new to me. I have never had a dog that has difficulties switching off. Kubo was a bit of hard work teaching chill, but when he got it, he got it. He is perfect though ... Piper forgets... 🙄💕Now - Piper is brilliant normally, but this nose work stuff - she's off the charts. She loves it.I will now be working on teaching her to 'chill' while off the circuit, teach her to come on to the circuit calmly, wait, then signal to 'find'.It's a work in progress... In the meantime... I might have to invest in ear plugs for the rest of the crew 🙄🤣I'm learning some new stuff. I love days out with the darling husband, Kubo and Piper.I constantly get people telling me how well trained Kubo and Piper are... The darling husband - not so much 🤣😍I put millions of hours of work into both my dogs. Hours and hours and hours. Not hours each day. When one of your favourite students sends you a photo of their glorious dog just chilling and watching their family members doing sports - it makes my world sparkle.Sometimes as trainers we try to explain what impulse control is... What chilling means... What teaching your dog to do nothing means - and a lot of people don't 'get' it... 😞It means just being chill. The Spice Girls 💗💕🥰They are still here 💕Wasabi ( short hair ) is doing well in spite of having heart/lung/kidney stuff going on. She's prancing around like a boss. She trusts me 110% which is huge as she doesn't give that lightly 😍. She's also one of my Kubo's favourites 💕Cumin ( long hair ) is just cruising. She is so cool. This glorious little creature came to puppy class tonight. My right hand lady.However... She got so very excited when she saw the beautiful vet nurses at Belrose Veterinary Hospital 🙄 carried on like a pork chop... 🙄🤣She then got super excited when my lovely students came in... 🙄🤣So I simply popped her on tie up to watch the class.She lay down and calmed herself. She was periodically rewarded for just chilling.This is what I am going to do each class now as she needs to learn to regulate herself in this situation.Training never stops. You need to layer up a foundation of communication, a foundation of trust, a foundation of respect, a foundation of engagement, a foundation of confidence.You need to show your dog you are the shelter they need in order to follow you in a happy, healthy, confident state.Nothing to do with dominating your dog. That's barbaric.It is all about being your dog's safe space.It's about going forward with your dog as a beautiful partnership.But here's the thing. My Piper 💕She's not a lady.She is, however, a phenomenal little pup who follows, had the ability to make amazing choices and she's just too much fun.I tell my students that my Piper isn't the dog I would have chosen. She isn't.She's Kelpie/Koolie/Border Collie/Staffy.A cocktail of complete crazy...I had Impostor Syndrome when I decided to adopt her as I always teach my students to know the breed and fulfil their needs.Piper was a bit manic when I got her. Took a lot of patience, commitment, and communication to show her what I needed.I also had to learn from her as to what she needed.Now - she's so groovy! Seriously. She's party starter.She's the one you want 💕She's phenomenal.She's a super sensitive soul who has the most beautiful meet and greet... I do small, casual classes on Saturday mornings in Frenchs Forest.Yesterday I had 5 gorgeous dogs learning about lead skills and impulse control. These classes are very relaxed. The aim is for each dog to chill out on their spot while waiting to be called out for an exercise.Some find it difficult. Others settle in very quickly.This photo is of gorgeous Douglas, who fell asleep before his owners got to the Roseville Bridge 💕I also have pay as you go classes on Friday afternoons in Elanora Heights too. Dog Park etiquette.Here's the thing...If your dog is a bully - you should not have them off lead in a dog park.If your dog is a pest - up in other dog's grills and doesn't leave them alone - you should not have your dog off lead in a dog park.If your dog has no recall - you should not have your dog off lead in a dog park.If you expect other people/dogs to entertain your dog - you should not have your dog off lead in a dog park.If you try and stand up for yourself because you are advocating for your dog - expect to be verbally trounced! So here's the thing...To achieve engagement with your dog... You need to teach them where you are.If you set them loose too quickly and they have way too much fun without you... You are on the back foot. They are out to party!You need to establish a firm foundation with your dog that means fun, comfort, security, direction and engagement.It means listening to instructions. It means you are in control of your dog's situation at all times.If your dog doesn't believe this... They can't listen to you.You haven't taught them to find you. You haven't taught them to stop and listen to you. Here's the thing...Why take your dog out to the park then proceed to completely ignore them???Sit on the bench tick tocking, Instagramming, YouTubing, messengering, Facebooking, yacking on the phone to a friend, dawdling around yacking to a friend...All the time your dog is leaving giant messages around the place, running up and charging into dogs, nicking toys, jumping up on people 🙄🤬Or they nick toys... If you are asked to get said toy from your dog and return it... But your dog flips you the bird and proceeds to turn into an Olympic sprinter...Or - here's the best one... Another glorious day with the darling husband, Kubo and Piper 💕We had a lady ask us if her 4 month old Golden Retriever could meet them both.Kubo and Piper were lovely and patient... This weekend I had a busy one, but it was a great one 💕Bronte - Golden Retriever - therapy dog for Artarmon Public School, Bella - Cavalier - therapy dog for St Ives Public School and Sammy - Labradoodle - therapy dog for Curl Curl North Public School.I hold a therapy dog session with my therapy dogs and their handlers each month.It is just so fulfilling as these handlers are brilliant and I love catching up with them.Therapy dogs add so much to schools. So... Here's the thing...If you take your dog to an off lead dog park, then proceed to sit, text, Facebook, Tick Tock, chat etc and completely ignore your dog so they can poop everywhere, get up in other people and dog's grills and generally be a pest and you think this is ok... ??? 😡🤬And if you think it is ok to leave your dog in the dog park while you run/cycle around the out side so your dog runs after you like a crazed Velociraptor on crack??? Then when they aren't barreling after you, they are doing whatever they want while you get your exercise... 😡🤬How is this being with your dog? I don't get it...Why is it that so many people think they are above the rules and have their dogs off lead in leash only areas?
